Preparing Your Skid Steer for Winter: Attachments, Tips & Seasonal Shift

Preparing Your Skid Steer for Winter: Attachments, Tips & Seasonal Shift

As autumn fades and colder weather looms, many operators begin thinking about snow, ice, and winter cleanup. For skid steer owners, the shift from mowing, excavation, or earthmoving into snow removal is a turning point. Using the right attachments ensures your machine stays useful through all seasons.

In this post, we’ll walk through which attachments to prepare, how to transition your workflow, and what to keep in mind to make winter operations smooth.

Winter-Ready Attachments You Should Consider

Snow Plow
AGT offers an 84" hydraulic skid steer snow plow that can push snow, angle left or right, and is compatible with common quick-attach systems.
This is your core snow-clearing tool. With it you can clear driveways, sidewalks, parking lots, and push snow to safe zones.

Broom / Sweeper Attachment
The 72" skid steer broom sweeper is useful for light snow, slush, or cleanup after plowing.
It’s also handy when snow melts and leaves debris, or for brushing off salt, gravel, or dirt.

Seasonal Shift: From Fall to Winter Workflow

  1. Inspect & prep hydraulics, hoses & fittings
Cold weather strains hydraulic lines. Check for leaks, wear, cracks, and replace or reinforce where needed.

  2. Switch out attachments in advance
Don’t wait until the first snowfall. Mount the snow plow ahead of time, test angle functions, and run the system to confirm everything works.

  3. Store or maintain summer attachments
Mowers, tillers, brush cutters—these need cleaning, lubrication, and safe storage during the winter off-season.

  4. Use the broom / sweeper as a supplement
After heavy snowfall, broom attachments help with cleanup around edges, trimming after plows have done the heavy push.

  5. Monitor wear parts (edges, blades, skid shoes, springs)
Snow, ice, and abrasive surfaces can wear cutting edges quickly—keep extra edges or wear strips handy.

  6. Plan routes and piles
Know where to push snow (away from drains, buildings, road access). Use your plow’s angle controls smartly.

  7. Seasonal maintenance mid-winter
Check hydraulic fluid levels, greasing pivot points, and inspect attachments after heavy use periods.

Winter doesn’t mean downtime. With the right attachments and preparation, your skid steer stays productive. If you’re considering adding a snow plow, broom, or quick-tach conversion, now is the time to act. Reach out if you want help selecting gear or building a seasonal plan.
